I sat and watched along with the rest of America on Saturday afternoon as the Houston Texans got smacked up and down the field by the Kansas City Chiefs. It was hard to watch a team that I had so much hope for going into the game having the air taken right out of their sail on the very first play of the game as Knile Davis took a 106 yard kickoff to the house. I was at my favorite bar with one of my buddies, also a big Texan fan, and the mood shifted instantly after that play, I can only imagine the way it felt inside of NRG stadium. Now, there was a combination of factors that led to the Texans getting their backside handed to them, BUT, the main one was the QB play. I wrote a piece about the Texans before the start of the season ( http://www.realballinsiders.com/texans-defense-better-than-advertised/ ) and one of the points I emphasized was they weren’t going to be very good unless the QB position improved, and it didn’t, Brian Hoyer was the starting QB for the playoff game.

Hoyer was responsible for 5 total turnovers in the loss. FIVE! Four interceptions and a fumble, it was pretty pathetic. At one point in the game star WR DeAndre Hopkins can be seen yelling, “Get that m***** f***** outta there.” As you can see by the vine below, he wasn’t very happy. LOLOLOLOLOL

But can you blame him? Ever since 2002, the year they came into existence, the Texans have only drafted one, yes count them one, QB in the first round of the NFL draft. That man of course was Fresno State’s David Carr, who would have been a good QB but the offensive line was so bad that he got blown up on every play, it really wasn’t all his fault. Anyways, do the Texans really think you can keep making the playoffs without a REAL NFL starting QB? Bro, I know the defense is Top 3 in the league but as we saw clearly on Saturday, you’re not going to win playoff games/Super Bowls if you can’t score the damn ball. For how stacked almost every other position on both sides of the ball are, you’d figure that GM Rick Smith would consider drafting one in the upcoming draft. Which leads me nicely to my next train of thought.

There is three prospects at QB in the 2025 NFL draft who I think are for sure 1 st rounder’s, and one wild card that I personally would take a chance on due to him being a physical freak, ala Cam Newton. Paxton Lynch from Memphis, Jared Goff from Cal, and Carson Wents from North Dakota State are all projected by most “draft experts,” as first round talents. Now, I don’t like predicting where each guy is going or if that guy will still be there when the Texans draft at the 22 nd pick but I would not mind seeing anyone of those guys under center when training camp comes around. With that being said, neither one of those guys is who I REALLY would like to see the Texans gamble with in the first round, the man I want to take the helm is Dak Prescott. You might be familiar with Prescott after he and his Mississippi State team made some noise early on last season, which coincidentally had Prescott in the Heisman conversation. If you’re not familiar with Dak Prescott, let me drop some knowledge on you. Listed at 6’2 230lbs (that can’t be right he’s built like a train) he reminds me of a poor man’s Cam Newton. Let’s be honest, there is never going to be an athlete like Newton ever, especially at QB, but that is the closest guy I could think of to his playing style. Prescott really improved his passing in his senior year finishing off the year with 29 TD’s to only 5 INT’s, also 10 TD’s came by way of rushing the ball. With the way the NFL is transitioning to QB’s with some athleticism, this might be a diamond in the rough for Houston. He’s big, he’s physical, he’s smart, and most of all he has that IT factor, you could really see it from him when he put that team on his back the last couple of seasons. And if you don’t believe me name another Mississippi State player that Prescott played with and you can’t use google. Times up, you couldn’t do it. He has a natural smooth looking throwing form, no kinks really need to be ironed out when it comes to his arm mechanics. He was usually on the run in college but when he had time to set his feet and throw it, his arm strength is downright scary. Listen to me Houston, this may be the guy for you.

If we’re being honest this Texans team is a QB away from really being considered a Super Bowl threat, that’s all they need. I can’t fathom why upper management and Coach Bill O’Brien don’t see that. The defense is young and STACKED. It’s only going to get better once Jadeveon Clowney returns at 100%, once he and J.J. Watt are on opposite ends of the line on each down, it’s over. You can’t double team both those guys, you’re going to have to pick your poison. My pre-season piece about the Texans was almost spot on, let’s see if I can make it two for two.
