@P_ACasas

I grew up in a family of Dallas Cowboys fans and I’m not saying that proudly. I remember Sundays growing up filled with family gathered up around the BBQ as we watched the Cowboys game. It was our way of bonding, sports was a language we all speak fluently. We start the kids young, they learn to talk smack at a very young age around us. Basically everyone in my family reps the blue and silver proudly. I got aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, babies, dogs, cats in the family who love them, I’m surrounded by them. That was the scenario this past Sunday as the Cowboys squared up against the Steelers (side note: I have one Uncle who is a die-hard Steelers fan, except he wasn’t at this family gathering because he was in Pittsburgh actually attending the game, told you he was die-hard.)

Anyways, I sat there and cheered against the Cowboys as I did every single game I watched them play growing up. To be honest, I don’t think I enjoy anything more than watching a game with them and they lose, oh my god I let them have it. Except the Cowboys won on Sunday and if you watched the game, you know how freakin’ exciting those last couple of minutes were. It went from dead silent after Big Ben does what Big Ben do and led the Steelers down the field for a TD. That changed rather quickly when Ezekiel Elliot does what he do and the Steelers defense, “parted like the Red Sea.” My family erupted when this happened. If you know anything about Mexicans you know that we like to throw events outdoors, this time we just assembled on the front lawn of my Tia’s house. I’m surprised the cops weren’t called from the decibels of noise my family produced, it wouldn’t be the first time. I swear you could hear us from the next state over. I had uncles jumping up and down yelling like they just won the lottery. My Tia’s and cousins hugged each other as they jumped up and down, for that split moment it was pure joy and celebration. They even ran up to me and tried to high-five me in the excitement, I was like get out my face with that non sense, it’s like asking me to take a shot for Trump. It was beautiful though, the people I love the most celebrating, seeing my family happy makes me happy, even if it comes at the expense of the Cowboys winning. As I sat there and watched them celebrate for what felt like forever and I got to thinking, have I ever said anything nice about the Cowboys? After the victory Dallas was now 8-1 and was the Top Seed in the NFC. I was going to be forced to say something nice about the Cowboys now, what was it going to be?

I said very many things about Dallas Cowboys starting QB Dak Prescott but that was in January way before the Draft. Which also meant way before he was a Dallas Cowboy, so does that count, right?

I was writing about the Houston Texans at the time and this was also before Brock Osweiller, so it made sense at the time. I was calling for the Texans to take a gamble and draft Dak Prescott in the 1st round of the Draft. This guy is showing everyone now why I gave him such high praise then. Read the article and you’ll see everything I said.

Dak Prescott hasn’t looked like your typical rookie this year. He’s 8-1and looks oh so comfortable out there. Except when the blitz comes. As of Week 9 Prescott has thrown for 2,339 yards with 14 TD’s to only 2 interceptions with a 67% completion percentage, not to mention he has added 4 scores with his legs. I’m not a big believer in stats, they do lie sometimes, I judge guys with the simple eye-ball test and Dak has passed it with flying colors since he was in college. This guy is so cool and composed in the pocket. He never looks flustered, that’s in large part because I never see him try to play outside of himself. He knows what he’s good at and he knows where he has to improve, most rookies don’t care and try to do too much. When you make stupid mistakes your confidence starts to break and when your confidence starts to break, you do more stupid things and that is basically why you don’t play rookies.

I’m saying all these positive things about Dak Prescott because I watched Tony Romo ’s press conference today and I got a little emotional. I have been one of Romo’s biggest critics over the years. He could sneeze wrong and I’d give him crap for it but I didn’t do it because I didn’t see his value to the Cowboys, I did it because I like to run my mouth and piss my friends off. Today I saw him as more than an athlete, I finally saw him as a person. If you haven’t seen the video here you go.

Romo manned up and swallowed his pride for the sake of the team. Do you know how hard that is as an athlete? To sit back and realize that a young guy has come in when you got injured and kept the ship moving just as good, if not a little bit better? That’s a tough pill to swallow. Much respect to you, Tony.

My first thought was, “Of course it was time for Romo to give his blessing to Dak, right? This can be like Bledsoe and Brady 2.0, right?”

You have the young obvious heir apparent to the successor ready to go. Not only is he the future, he has proved that he’s worthy of the crown. I was confident in my thought until I checked social media and boy was my mind blown, but let’s be honest, when doesn’t Facebook or Twitter make you question life itself?

I’m from Austin, TX, three hours from Dallas. I know PLENTY of Cowboys fans besides my family. My FB and Twitter feed were filled with Romo’s press conference video. To my surprise, it was about 75% to 25% in turmoil because Romo has succeeded defeat, ala Hilary Clinton. I could not wrap my mind around this for the life of me. I couldn’t pin point why so many die-hard fans were attending the Romo funeral. I kind of let the thought go because I mean, who cares about the Cowboys, but outta nowhere BAM it hit me. I was thinking about this from the perspective of someone who doesn’t care whether they win the Super Bowl or ever win a game again. I needed to pick the brain of someone who breathes Cowboys.

I messaged my brother from another mother Herman ( @Baileythesavior ) told you he bleeds blue. I straight up asked him why would you want Romo back instead of riding the wave of momentum Dak Prescott had created. He hit me with some really insightful thoughts that I would have never in two lifetimes had.

He told me, “Statistically speaking, Romo is the best QB Dallas has ever had. The pressure of winning games in the regular season and winning games in the post season is completely different. There is a reason a rookie has never taken a team to the promise land.”

Which he isn’t lying when he says that. Romo is the Cowboys All-Time leading passer with 34,154 yards to his name. He also leads the team in TD’s with 247. He’s also 72 completions away from breaking Troy Aikman ’s record with almost less than 400 fewer attempts.

To which I responded, “I agree with most of that, except the post season thing. Romo has what? One? Two victories in the post season?”

Who has time to look up facts at a time like this?

“2 playoff victories and a controversial call to end the post season run…He still gives the best chance at a Super Bowl, in my opinion…He knows all the checks , he knows all the reads, he knows the whole playbook.” Herman answered.

It dawned on me then that experience overcomes in most situations. The fact that Romo has been there done that makes him the better QB for this team regardless of how he’s been injured in the past. How many fade routes has Romo hit Dez Bryant on? How many over the middle first downs has he thrown to Jason Witten ? Cole Beasley is Romo’s new check down specialist. Romo still has the juice to get it done, especially behind that offensive line who looks like The Monstars from Space Jam.

I then thought back to the multiple terrible throws from the Pittsburgh and Green Bay game. I thought about how shook he looks against that blitz. While under duress he has 6 fumbles with 3 of those have been lost, while throwing 54%.

At that point I understood everything that needs to be understood. Dak is the future, the whole universe knows that, myself included. Usually its pretty clear when it’s time to hand the baton to the future, if it wasn’t for Herman I’m pretty sure I’d still believe that Dak deserves the sport regardless if his play regressed and Romo was available. I still think Dak deserves to lose his spot, he has earned that right but if he doesn’t keep up the consistent play, Romo deserves a chance at taking this team to the elusive Super Bowl title that has haunted him and this franchise for years.

Oh yeah, remember how I said I was going to say something nice about the Cowboys? Silver is one of my favorite colors.
