NFL Week 8 Betting Trends May Drive Spike in UK Betting Traffic

28 October 2026

Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season has the market buzzing thanks to an unbeaten Eagles squad at the center of marquee matchups with significant public money on the move.

The market's main storylines

The biggest lines - and the sharpest line movement - are in games that matter for both the playoff push and betting handle.

That means all eyes are on the Eagles and Cowboys in a crucial NFC East division game. Opened as 3-point underdogs, the Cowboys have clawed back to just -1 in the latest numbers.

"With the exception of the Bengals-Titans 9-point spread, this the biggest line of Week 8 overall," says gambling analyst Johnny Avello. "And when the public shows that much support for the undefeated team, you know you've got a needle-moving game."

Avello expects money to continue flowing toward the Eagles - next to Bills-Chiefs in terms of volume, this is shaping up to be the biggest game of the week when the American audience wakes up and places bets ahead of the Sunday kickoff.

Other key spreads to watch:

- Chiefs favored by a field goal over the visiting Broncos, with a total of 47.5

- Commanders laying 3 to host Eagles, totaling 45.5

- 49ers favored by more than a touchdown over the Panthers

Every other team is currently within a field goal or less of the spread on projections, says Avello, but those three could be difference-makers and deserve a closer look.

Games driving betting interest

Aside from the key money lines, this is shaping up to be a busy and high-scoring slate. Every game sports a total of over 40 points, with the Bills at Chiefs and Seahawks hosting Browns among the highest.

"You've got a few teams that are showing big returns so far, and then the public just piles in," says Avello. "It creates a market spike for the bookies, and boy - don't bet the under. If the sharp money's coming in on the Bills, you know the Chiefs are liable to get a boost. The lines on those totals."

Digital bookmaker Covers reported that the Browns are attracting particular volume, followed by Bills and 49ers. The Nevada Gaming Control Board noted a significant spike in betting volume at the Bills, Raiders (against the Bears), and the Commanders.

"All the numbers show the same trend: this is going to be a weekend of hard-hitting spreads and big totals," says Avello. "It's gonna be a high-scoring Vegas weekend for sure."

For UK bookies, the Bills seem poised to be a driver. The NFL season keeps an overnight schedule that lets some games kickoff in early afternoon UK time - and the Bills are sure to draw an early crowd. It's a popular team for the UK betting market, plus they're coming off strong performances.

Underdogs and line movement

Then there are the games that have the public fade.

The Giants are drawing 75% of the backing money to make a game of it against the Jets. The Raiders, so far a favorite of bettors, are luring 70% of the market money behind them at 3.5 and drawing sharp money at 4.

Public money heavily favoring the Eagles is nothing new, notes Avello, but financial backing has now got them to minus 6.5 points for the first time.

"I'm not sure the Eagles cover that spread, but they'll be close," says Avello. "The point spread could move another point on this."

As the season pushes into late autumn, there's more focus on the playoff push and Wild Card standings. Teams in the divisional hunt are starting to draw more attention.

ESPN also noted that the 49ers' line had been "backed harder than any other team in the league, sustaining favorable returns on an aggressive amount of action."

"There's some serious pressure on anything that starts with Eagles, Chiefs, and here in this situation, Eagles and 49ers", says Avello. "This is the main story given the play of the teams, the relevant race position, and the fact that it's one of the marquee matchups with an international audience."

Why UK betting traffic may rise

However, for UK bookmakers, this week looks like a real winner.

The focus on Eagles could drive interest-sustaining volume alone if there's a betting handle overseas.

The Bengals vs. Titans, the biggest NFL favorite of the week, seemed to draw wide public appeal under center, which could make any routing interesting.

Avello noted that Bills-Chiefs, Eagles-Cowboys, and Broncos-Seahawks are likely to see the most betting, given their place in the standings, and that might drive spectators in the UK to see the Bills game.

"We're seeing some big money-backed favorites this weekend," Avello said. "Eagles, Raiders, Seahawks, Bengals - they're favorites across the board, and they could be real draws after recent wins."

The two teams with legs on the sidelines with a bye are sure to impact how much action there is. As of Week 8, the 49ers, Giants, Saints, and Texans have byes, leaving most of the big hitters in this weekend's action. Look for spikes:

- Where big games and big plays hit

- On the Bills, Titans, Eagles, Browns, and 49ers

- In line with the volume of competitive games and on the roads against underdogs

UK betting tends to trail the public crowd: with the Falcons and Raiders heavily backed as underdogs, Cowboys at 49ers is set to draw early interest, and Week 7 saw an unusually high volume of betting money, London watchers could follow the trends.

Plus, UK betters tend to focus on underdogs, which is why the Colts are catching a surge in popularity.

"What I'd watch is teams that are popular with UK spectators", says Avello. "The Tottenham connection, and particularly the Titans, have been getting back commissions on recent bad beats and underdogs, sometimes getting big underdogs up in the field - such as Broncos, which they've backed hard."

What to watch next in the playoff race

The Eagles to deliver their best performance and carry the momentum, so predict them as big in the UK.

Eagles-Cowboys should be a new high point, with bookmakers likely to prepare for a big handle. There will be some real interest in the Jets-Patriots and Giants-Colts, given their early Thursday night slot.

The Titans have been a popular pick, and this week by opening up by 9; this may drive some unexpected interest, although Bengals should be solid enough.

Look out for the late games - no doubt some big underdogs continue to attract action well into the afternoon contests, given the amount of selection.
