NBA's 2026–27 Gambling Reforms to Reshape Legal Player Prop Markets

26 October 2026

The NBA has ordered its licensed sportsbook partners, including FanDuel and DraftKings, to prohibit or limit certain wager types beginning in the 2026-27 season. Along with expanded education and oversight, these changes will significantly alter how player props are structured and wagered on in legal US sports betting markets.

The policy follows several gambling-related controversies, including player accusations connected to prop betting. It also responds to the explosive expansion of player and micro betting markets following nationwide legalization since 2018. The league maintains these rules are essential for safeguarding game integrity.

NBA Cracks Down

The most notable changes target player propositions:

1. Combinations of multiple under bets on the same player's statistics are now forbidden. For instance, gamblers can no longer combine unders on a player's points, rebounds and assists into one bet.

2. So-called "first-of" markets are prohibited. This eliminates wagers on which player scores first, makes the initial three-pointer, gets the opening rebound, records the first assist, makes the initial steal, or blocks the first shot.

3. Bets predicting the opening tip-off winner are also discontinued.

4. New rules bar wagers focused on a player missing particular shots, such as their first or next attempt.

5. Another major adjustment prohibits under bets for players projected to play less than 12 minutes, mainly affecting deep bench players. Parlays involving these limited-minute unders are entirely banned.

These restrictions expand on existing prohibitions against betting on turnovers, fouls, missed free throws and props involving 10-day or two-way contract players.

The NBA is simultaneously launching improved bettor education programs and an AI-based monitoring system to detect unusual betting activity. League officials expressed concern about "irregular wagering patterns related to injuries, roster adjustments and social media posts."

While focusing on markets deemed most susceptible to interference, the NBA emphasizes these measures don't represent a wholesale retreat from player props. The regulations specifically govern NBA and WNBA betting.

Regulated Betting Landscape

The NBA has integrity partnerships covering most legal US sportsbooks. However, these rules don't immediately apply to federally supervised prediction markets, as the league hasn't established equivalent agreements with those platforms. Financial analyst Adam Fishkin estimates the changes might decrease NBA micro betting volume by 10-15% initially.

"Regarding sustainability, fan engagement and preserving competition integrity, we're dedicated to proper implementation," stated NBA Data and Integrity Executive Shawn Pettengill. "Just as we continuously improve for fans, we must address risks from widespread betting access and advancing technology."

Though some industry participants consider these measures excessively cautious, the NBA maintains the focused restrictions allow for protecting integrity while sustaining healthy proposition betting markets.
