If you’re a Red Sox fan like myself, there hasn’t been much to be happy about these last couple of seasons. To be honest I haven’t been watching baseball lately (well I watched a little league game a couple of days ago but to be fair it was 1 AM and there was nothing on TV). When your team doesn’t produce you often get discouraged and slowly step away from the sport, unless you’re bandwagon fan and follow players such as LeBron wherever he goes. I have nothing against bandwagon fans by the way, I’m just not one of them; heck I’ve liked the Jets since I knew what football was. You know a time the Red Sox made me really happy? in 2004, I was with my family watching game 4 of the American League Championship Series while the Red Sox trailed 3-0 thinking, “why don’t my favorite sports teams ever do anything exciting?” (I’m a Nuggets fan too in case you were wondering).
Well my prayer was answered when in game 4 David Ortiz hit his second walk off home-run of the current post season in the 12th inning. Of course I was optimistic, I was 12 and my team won in style (I was probably the only person in the room who actually believed the Red Sox would win the series). Red Sox won 6-4.
Once we got to game 5 I started to come down to earth a little bit, I believed my father liked the Red Sox and he did until they were down 3-1 in the ALC (bandwagon fan). This is honestly the first time I realized that to be a fan of a team you had to be committed and I’ve my life lived behind this experience. This game set a record for the longest post season game at 5 hours 49 minutes although the record was again broken the year after. Red Sox won 5-4.
Game 6 was history in the making. After winning game 6 the Red Sox were the first team in MLB history to force game seven after being down 3-0 to start the series. They were the 26th team in history to be down 3-0 in a series at the time. Of course the Red Sox won 4-2.
Game 7 – this was it, make or break did we come all this way to lose this game time? It was Wednesday, October 20th, 2004 at Yankees’ Stadium. I can only imagine how many people bet on this game and how many betters lost their money in the series. Starting pitchers were Derek Lowe and Kevin Brown . David Ortiz, my favorite player was named series MVP. The Red Sox 10-3 won and riots broke out. Police officers killed one person in the madness RIP Victoria Snelgrove. I didn’t know that at the time so it was one of the best days of my life. Of course such an experience would never be worth the loss of a human being.
