The 2018 NFL Draft begins in 35 days and I will be launching several articles with everything you need to know about the prospects who are working very hard to realize their dream of becoming an NFL superstar. For this first article, I will be analyzing the first 3 players that I believe will be taken in the draft by the respective teams who hold the picks. The first 3 picks, in order, belong to the Cleveland Browns, the New York Giants, and the New York Jets. Ladies and gentleman, here are your first 3 athletes to be taken in the NFL draft:
- Saquon Barkley, the all-star running-back from Penn State, is for me the number 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. Having played for 3 years, he rushed for at least 1000 yards each season, and carried for a grand total of 43 touchdowns in his collegiate career. That’s an average of 89 yards and a little more than a touchdown per game. A solid scorer, a powerhouse in the trenches, scorching breakout speed, and several first team All-American selections make Barkley the complete offensive weapon. The Cleveland Browns believe they have just traded for their franchise QB (Tyrod Taylor) and have added showboat wide receiver Jarvis Landry during free agency. All the Cleveland offense is missing at this time is a star running-back, and I believe Cleveland would do well to take the best player available and finally go back to their dominant run game which brought them many wins in their old glory days.
Baker Mayfield, the Oklahoma Sooners star quarterback who singlehandedly brought his team to the Rose Bowl and almost pulled off the miraculous comeback against Georgia, before falling short in overtime. Mayfield’s stats are fitting of a star college QB: 43 touchdowns thrown, only 6 interceptions, a completion percentage of 70% and a whopping passer rating of 198.9 for his senior year. But there is something else about Mayfield besides his stats that people don’t talk enough about, and that’s his attitude. He is a very cocky competitor and he’s not afraid to run his mouth and let other teams know what he’s about. He is a bold leader and will not shy away from pressure when the time comes. The New York Giants, who are desperately looking for a replacement for aging quarterback Eli Manning, should look no further than Baker Mayfield. His stats are more than enough to go on, but you pair Mayfield’s swagger with the likes of Giant’s wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and you’ve got yourself an electric connection for years to come.
Josh Rosen, the sensational quarterback coming out of UCLA has all the franchise QB potential that the New York Jets so desperately need. The Jets have been stricken with injury after injury upon every QB who they’ve brought in and it has taken a heavy toll on overall team morale. Enter Rosen, who in my opinion is a great system quarterback and has shown to be the man for the occasion. This past season he threw for 26 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, a completion percentage of 62.6% and a passer rating of 147.0. Rosen, I would argue is a safer bet than the likes of Baker Mayfield when looking at QB prospects. The Jets don’t need swagger, the Jets don’t need incredible college stats, what the Jets need is a QB who can learn the scheme and make it his own while staying healthy so they can finally have a foundation upon which to build a championship contending team. Now, Rosen does have a few minor injuries dating back to his high school days, but I would argue that the whole point here is to keep the QB whole. If he gets injured then it’s back to the drawing board for the Jets anyways, so I want to hold out hope that this guy is the man for the job and that he can hold it together for the Jets who deserve a star player. The Jets should look to keep it simple at this year’s draft, as they really cannot afford to mess up another pick, especially with this elite pool of eligible quarterbacks coming in.
This draft order was selected by yours truly based off of stats and actual observation throughout regular season games and scouting combine performances. These are my top 3 picks for this year’s draft. Saquon Barkley is a break out star that surely will prove to be a solid pick no matter where he goes. Meanwhile QBs Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen have a lofty ceiling, but it is absolutely crucial that they be drafted to the right team with the right environment so that their respective personalities can come out and allow them to play at the highest level.
I will be releasing my next article on the next 6 picks (picks 4-10) soon so be on the lookout. As always thanks for reading, much love!
