LeBron James can transition into his next phase of his career.
James has reached the stage where a player can smooth into full retirement as his career dwindles down. Which means LeBron James can go from “ring chaser” to riding off into the sunset.
Michael Jordan moved to this stage when he went to the Washington Wizards at the end of his career. Despite mediocre players and mediocre record, he still went. LeBron James can follow this pursuit as he heads to Los Angeles.
The King is done winning championships. James got his collection of rings and other awards such as the combined seven MVP awards. He has proven his greatness through amazing success and reached many pinnacles in his career. We may never see a talent like him; the impact he had on and off the court was immense.
So if LeBron James is done accomplishing what needs to do in basketball (which he famously put out a quote saying he is done what he needs to accomplish). He surely can take his talents to the west coast.
A great nucleus of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and potentially Paul George; LeBron looks at that and become attracted to all that home-grown talent. The Lakers’ main mission is to steal Paul George from Oklahoma City or else they are not as attractive to LeBron. Paul George’s destination will arguably decide what James’ destination will be in 2018 free agency.
James is a businessman, there is no better place to build his brand in a glamorous city like Los Angeles. Not many greats have done excellent entrepreneurship off the court like LeBron James has. This is a first step in saving for retirement funds after his basketball career. This is a great move for him, from a basketball and business standpoint
From a Contrary View
Many of the longtime Los Angeles fans are not fond of Lebron James. Those same Lakers fans remember his rivalry with the franchise’s beloved Kobe Bryant. The Lakers were expected to meet James in the finals in both of their recent title years.
James has a history of making GM decisions on what seems best for him. Always being in charge of what players he wants to sign and play with. Being a complete diva and a control freak is the last thing hardcore Lakers fans desire. Any radical changes will drive the fans into frenzy and respond with negativity.
As long as James gets the certain players he demands to play with, he is happy and satisfied. He may or may not agree with certain teammates and management people on the decisions he makes. Lakers fans will throw a riot if LeBron James even changes some of the basketball or management decisions they’ve grown to be contempt with.
Los Angeles do have other priorities and goals in mind. The development of Ingram and Lonzo needs to be completed successfully. Existing around LeBron’s antics which garner attention from the media is too much. That media attention is bad for a franchise that has hit their lows.
What about his performance at an old age? LeBron James ages like any other player except with no signs of slowing down. He still is human and will wear down eventually, no matter how hard he tries to play at the highest level. He will be at 34 years of age and definitely not what he was back in his tenure in Miami.
Los Angeles demands championships every time they enter the playoffs. James not fulfilling that would be a stain on his history and the entire Lakers franchise as well. Riding on James’ back into playoff contention will be easily possible. An early playoff loss will hurt his legacy and the franchise itself.
As always, Lakers are always in the middle of big rumors in regards to which star player they can sign from the market. The rumors always swirl and fly around each free agency period, as this upcoming free agency should be no different.
