Isaiah Thomas has recently said that he believes that he deserves a max contract. Isaiah Thomas has captured the hearts of many NBA fans. Thomas is only 5’9″ and he has been an incredible scorer this past season. Thomas averaged 28.9 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field, and 38 percent from three. These marks are career highs across the board, besides three-point percentage where it is was virtually the same.
Thomas’ all around game has not shown that he deserves a max contract however. Thomas had a defensive rating of 108.6 which ranks him second to last among all-stars (Kyrie Irving is last). Thomas was fortunate that his backcourt mate Avery Bradley was a fantastic defender for the Celtics. Bradley has been traded to Detroit, which could lead to defensive difficulties for the Boston Celtics backcourt. Another red flag for Isaiah Thomas is his rebounding. Thomas averaged 2.7 rebounds per game last year. The Celtics ranked 26th in total rebounds per game last year, so the team definitely could use more production from Thomas.
Isaiah Thomas also was not a great playmaker last year. Thomas had the 5th highest usage rate for any player in the NBA, and 1st among point guards. Isaiah was 15th in assists when compared to the other point guards in the NBA (John Wall, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Ricky Rubio, Jeff Teague, Jrue Holiday, Kyle Lowry, Rajon Rondo, Stephen Curry, T.J. McConnell, Elfrid Payton, Eric Bledsoe, Dennis Schroder, and Mike Conley all averaged more assists per game). Isaiah Thomas does not deserve a max contract unless he can show improvement in passing, rebounding, and defense.
