I think every sports writer reaches a point where they come to a realization. Even though this writing thing can be lonely, you realize that you’re nothing without the team around you. I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve had to cancel on going to Corner Bar with my buddy Jason because I have to do some research, or I’m recording the podcast, or I have to put together a special interview I’m ready to drop. You have to make certain sacrifices to make sure everything is perfect. That’s where I look to my RBI family for support and advice. They’re the few people in my life who understand the impossible struggle of balancing work, social life, researching for pieces, booking people to interview, AND maintaining personal relationships with our significant others. I went to Twitter and asked my followers to give me some ideas on what to write about. That’s when Mallorie from DigInDenver said I should write about my RBI family, I think she was playing but I took it to heart and this is what came from that idea. This piece would be 100,000 words if I had to talk about everyone who works for RBI now, so I kept it to the people who have been around the longest for me.
Since it was her idea, let’s start with Mallorie. You brought our team that motherly figure that every squad needs. Straight up, you get shit done. You run the DigInDenver site better than I could ever dream of running LakersLounge. In a field dominated by men, you bring the intensity that would make any women proud. When I read your pieces I always feel like I’m reading an educated writer. You know your stuff and it shows. The work that you, and your team of writers did this season covering the Denver Nuggets was top-notch. This is only the beginning, don’t stop now. Always remember that you are the leader of your team and that comes with a lot of responsibility. But like Kanye West says, “To whom much is given, much is tested,” the hard work is just beginning, but I know Rafael and myself wouldn’t have anyone else running things on your side.
You are the first writer that I brought on to work with me for LakersLounge. From now until the day I’m laid to rest I will tell people about you. I was so excited when you agreed to write alongside me, you told me you were a fan of my work when I asked you to join. You were the first person who ever told me that, I can credit you for being a source of motivation. Your perspective is so interesting and always fresh. I’m very hesitant to write along-side any writer because I’m afraid that they aren’t going to hold their own with my eccentric style, that never crossed my mind when I asked you to hop on a piece with me for the first time. As talented of a writer you are, you’re an even better person. The world needs more people like you.
I see so much potential in you, you’re the only person I know who has the same drive to be great like I do. I enjoyed your articles way before you asked me to start the podcast. Look at us now, we just dropped our third episode. So many of my friends have listened to The Shoot Your Shot podcast and there is a common consensus. That consensus is that you are going to be a star. Somehow you put up with me every week and make this show happen. The sky is the limit for you, I believe that. Be you and don’t change anything up. I know in due time what we create will reach the masses. This is only the beginning, I hope you’re ready for the crazy ride we’re about to embark on.
Dude, you literally changed my life. You took a chance on me when so many sites didn’t want me, they all told me that my style would never click with people. I guess you saw something in me that nobody did. You didn’t set boundaries on what I was able to create, and look what happened, I somehow got celebrities to sit down and talk to me for interviews. You made me the VP after we got Adam Carriker to become a regular contributor to the site, coming from where I come from, being the VP of anything isn’t really a possibility. You gave me and my crazy ideas a platform to reach thousands of people with the click of a button, and that I will never forget. I know that one day someone is going to come along and offer me a lot of money to go write for them. Believe me when I say this, I’m not going anywhere unless you can come too and get a cut of the profit. Without you I’d never be able to do all the cool shit I’m doing for the site now. I promise you I’m going to put this site on the map.
To all my RBI family that I didn’t get to mention, this is just the beginning of our journey. I’m sure I’ll have to write more of these pieces to explain how proud I am of each and every one of you. Like always family, let’s go make dope shit happen today, and never forget to shoot your shot. It may be the day that shot goes in.
