- What’s good Lakers Nation?
Oh what a time to be a Lakers fan, am I right? Our front office is in turmoil. Our owner had to get a restraining order against her two brothers who she fired. The on court production isn’t much better. Two men who we payed a combined $164 million for can barely get on the floor. The 10-10 start that had fans going crazy about the Lakers being back has been gone. LONG GONE. These Lakers are now mired in a 19-43 disaster of a record and are just waiting for this season to close out mercifully. Yet, another season ended in misery. Yet another season ended in disappointment. Sadly us Lakers fans have excepted this as our reality for almost the past 5 years now. This is nothing new.
Wait wait, but it is! Take notice Lakers fans… The offseason is coming.
Yes, that time when the draft is right around the corner and the Lakers have a great chance of nabbing that 3rd pick (they stand at 46% as of now). Let’s say they draft Lonzo Ball….oooh wouldn’t that be nice? Then we take it to free agency. Because of some questionable moves made last offseason (TIMOFEY MOSGOVLUOL DENG*) The Lakers can only sign one max free agent. oh, but this isn’t Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss at the helm, this is MAGIC JOHNSON. He’ll flash his smile and get us a Paul Millsap or some other marquee free agent, and maybe with the help of Rob Pelinka work out a deal that frees us of the albatross contracts of Mosgov and Deng. We can fully embrace the youth movement while making a concentrated effort to really start winning some games around the foundation of our young core.
Let’s say that season ends and we barely miss the playoffs. Don’t fret! The core Lakers are still under the age of 24. The marquee free agent X the Lakers signed adds validity to this rising force. D’angelo Russell, Julius Randle, and especially Brandon Ingram have gotten another year of seasoning and with Johnson and Pelinka at the helm L.A. looks to be a team with top notch front office management. Jim Buss sees the error of his ways and he and his brother patch things up with Jeannie Buss. The Lakers get another rotation piece to add to this budding team, and guess what? Paul George takes notice. Yes, the free agent to be loves L.A. and is confident in the direction that L.A is going, and he signs a massive deal with them in July, bringing the Lakers back to the top. Yes, the Lakers are back!
Now this may or may not happen, but as a Lakers fan right now, I think it is important for us to embrace the present while keeping a hopeful eye on the future. These aren’t your parent’s Lakers. These aren’t even the Lakers we’re used to. But that’s what makes this exciting. This is a whole new crew, a new iteration, Lakers 2.0. We don’t know where they’re going, this Lakers squad could end up in epic greatness or spectacular disappointment, but as Lakers fans that’s why we watch the games, why we live and die with every made three and missed shot from the boys in forum blue and gold. We’re Lakers fans, its what we do. And when we’re back on top, it’ll feel like we never left.
