In Colorado Rockies news, it was announced that rookie left fielder, David Dahl, will be out for longer than originally thought with back problems.
Earlier in the week Dahl was feeling optimistic on his back soreness, but the lingering problems have raised some concerns with the team. According to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post, manager Bud Black explained the issue further. “We first said David would be out a couple of days, but it’s going to be longer than that, for sure,” Black also added, “I don’t have a timetable on it, but it could be a week or two. There are some things going on with his back. David is undergoing some tests, and scans, and treatment to see what is going on.”
The optimism is that Dahl will only be out for another week or so and that the issue won’t affect his ability to be ready for opening day. He has had injury history in the past, having to have his spleen removed after a nasty outfield collision in 2015, but he was able to bounce back quickly. Luckily for the Rockies, this issue presented itself early in spring training, giving the young outfield star plenty of time to recover and rest, and compete for the starting left field position.
The 22-year old rookie hit .315 with seven HR and drove in 24 RBI in 63 games in a mid season call-up campaign. Being one of the top prospects in the system the past few years he is highly regarded and is looking to make more of an impact in his first full season. This spring he was looking to compete with Gerardo Parra for the starting left field position. Parra is coming off an injury shortened season and hoping to bounce back after signing a free agent contract last offseason.
With David Dahl out for sometime and Carlos Gonzalez playing in the world baseball classic for a few weeks, expect Parra to get plenty of playing time in the outfield. Also count on some of the younger guys, such as Jordan Patterson and Raimel Tapia to get much needed at bats this spring. The Rockies have plenty of outfield depth and it looks like they are already having to take advantage of it.
We will keep you updated when more information is available on Dahl in the coming weeks.
