BYU upsets No. 1 (previously) undefeated Gonzaga 79-71. The Bulldogs got off to a hot start with a 16-2 lead out of the gate and held that lead comfortably for the first 10 minutes of the game. BYU however, refused to back down to the giants from the WWC.
Coming into the game Gonzaga held a 29-0 record, leaving them the only undefeated team left in the country. The last time these two teams met at BYU, Gonzaga pulled off the 85-75 victory in a hard fought game. The rematch looked like it would be a cake walk as Vegas had the home team as 20.5 point favorites. BYU wasn’t paying any attention to the fact that no one had any faith in them and they just kept fighting back in a game that seemingly went down to the wire.
Eric Mika lead the way with 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Cougars were able to erase a 16 point deficit on the road to shock Gonzaga in their final regular season game.
This is the first time in BYU history that they defeated the top ranked team in the country. Gonzaga will still easily get into the tournament, it just won’t be as a number 1 seed.
