Magic is in the air in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Lakers have named Magic Johnson President of Basketball Operations, also announcing that the team has fired Mitch Kupchak to make Johnson the team president.
During his press conference Johnson said, “It’s a dream come true to return to the Lakers as President of Basketball Operations.” Since 1972 Magic have been a part of the Lakers nation.
Jeanie Buss said “I took these actions today to achieve one goal: Everyone associated with the Lakers will now be pulling in the same direction, the direction established by Earvin and myself. We are determined to get back to competing to win NBA championships again.”
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer also serves as a part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Sparks franchises. He is expected to report directly to Buss. Magic Johnson already speaking out on the Lakers needs to put them back on tip. Magic still think the Lakers can compete with the Spurs and Warriors with one move.
“We’re a superstar away from competing against (the Warriors and Spurs),” Johnson said. “One guy changes our landscape, because we have everything we need now, except that one guy to make everybody better.”

Magic Johnson is starting early in his role in the front office. Magic was not lying on what he said. The Lakers need a Star leader to help the young studs surface well in the NBA. Right now, the Lakers are without a star leader on the team. Their leader is a 19 year-old point guard (D’angelo Russell)who showed his immaturity. Lakers have young players that’s ready to splurge and flourish well in their position.
The rising stars are playing good, the Lakers playing good as in whole. The rebuilding process is going perfectly. Last year, the Lakers were focus on how to play together and finding their role. This year the Lakers are more competitive. They are trying figuring out how to win games in the final minutes of the 4th quarters. Julius Randle is showing that he’s a future walking double-double. Jordan Clarkson showing that he’s a mini Russell Westbrook. D’angelo Russell is improving his IQ and becoming a star. New draft pick Brandon Ingram is showing his growth throughout the season (add stats)
It looks like the Lakers will be a lottery team again heading into the offseason. That’s the beauty of Magic Johnson’s new role. It’s not that he has the best ability to sign or trade for a all star and a better NBA roster, but he has the presence, and now the power. Players will become more fixated on making the Lakers their new home.
The Lakers are controlling their future. They are in a good position heading into the offseason, and are looking to be serious contenders in the years coming. But next year will be the year the Lakers competing in the Western conference playoff spot.
The Lakers could potentially trade their draft pick for a star or take the pick and keep rebuilding. Either way the Lakers make there future look bright in LA.
