In an effort to improve “pace of play”, the MLB has just agreed to eliminate the intentional walk rule and replace it with a signal from the dugout.
If you know anything about baseball, you know this will drastically impact the game. Intentional walks have a funny way of causing pitchers to lose confidence in pressure situations. By eliminating the rule those “weak-minded” pitchers will simply be bailed out by a signal coming from the bench, by someone who isn’t as involved in the game.
This new rule also directly impacts the base runners, who could potentially have the opportunity of a stolen base via a passed ball. There is just too much wrong with this change that I don’t think the MLB took it into enough consideration.
I honestly don’t understand why this new fad of increasing the speed of the game, and decreasing the overall length became a thing. Baseball is a complicated game that most people find “boring” because they don’t understand everything that goes into it. I’m so tired of all the recent changes to the game that I love. From changes to the instant replay, running over the catcher and last year eliminating collisions at second base during a double play. These are all moves that I think are RUINING the game.
In a society where everybody now expects everything instantly, baseball was kind of way to get away from all of that and just appreciate the game for everything that it has to offer. There are so many games within the game that make baseball so great. Pitcher vs. batter, two men going head to head with all eyes on you trying to get the best of each other. Quit trying to speed everything up and just sit back with your friends and family and enjoy. Enjoy it while you still can, who knows what they will try to change next.
