This disaster may never stop. The New York franchise is clearly falling apart in every aspect. But the Knicks are trying their best to keep it alive, as yesterday in the afternoon they took the battle to the visiting San Antonio Spurs and came out with a 94-90 victory behind Carmelo Anthony’s 25 point performance. The team that forgot how to defend, came out and held the Spurs to 36% from the field. Sure, Kawhi Leonard still scored 36 points, but it was worth it.
And this game maybe, just maybe, gave a glimp of hope to all the angry Knicks fans. ”They want us to compete. I understand that. ‘Win, lose or draw they want us to go out there and compete on a nightly basis.” said Anthony about the fans.
But what if this isn’t enough? What if the Knicks just need a little more help? Or maybe they just don’t have the right pieces?
The Knicks have been going up and down all season, and with all the trade rumors surrounding small forward, Carmelo Anthony, it’s clear that something will happen soon. But, does New York really need to trade Anthony? Is he the only one available in the market right now? What about the other pieces that you can ship to another team and maybe get something going for this second half of the season that’s about to start?
Let’s take Anthony and put him aside for one moment. You have Derrick Rose, who many reports have stated that he will not be joining the Knicks after the season has ended. So, why don’t put Rose on the trade block and see what you can get for him? Rose is one box of full of surprises, as one night he can come “Rose MVP style” and the other he can come “Rose crystal knee style”. But, anyways, Derrick Rose is still a pretty good asset that can get you something valuable back (maybe not an all star, for sure), but you can repay that damage and get something back instead of just letting him walk and start all over again in the off season.
On another hand, you have backup point guard, Brandon Jennings, who for me, is having an outstanding season, averaging 8.8 PPG and 5.1 APG and it’s that spark from the bench that the Knicks so desperately need. But, if you want to stick with Rose and maybe give rookie Ron Baker more minutes, then trade Jennings and get some defensive presence which clearly you need.
Then you got some other pieces, like Joakim Noah, who has been criticized a lot because he’s just not the same player he used to be. You have Courtney Lee, who at sometimes we all love because of his hustle, and then we all hate because of his invisibility on the court. Or, you have Kyle O’Quinn, who is still relatively young and you can get something pretty good for him. You see? It’s all about wanting to make a good team and wanting to be proactive.
But, the real question is: should the Knicks make a move before deadline?
I think they do. I just don’t think that Phil Jackson is in the right mind to do so, as he is too busy trying to ship Carmelo Anthony to whoever takes him. If the Knicks want to make a final playoff run without any moves whatsoever, then they need to step up in every aspect of the game. Because at the end of the season, it may look like the Knicks won’t be good for a while.
