The Knicks started the season with some good moves. In the summer, they added to their roster the formers Chicago players, Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah. The 32 year old, Carmelo Anthony, who tasted the winning path in Rio Olympics and won his third gold medal with USA basketball team, entered the season with hope and motivation that the Knicks could become a winning franchise again.
But the Rose “super team” have they days counted. While the New York Knicks are now 23-33 having another losing season. Not only for the record and the possibilities to enter to the NBA playoffs, Carmelo Anthony also has been stabbed by the Knicks front office. While Phil Jackson is seeking a trade for him, what can Anthony do?
Anthony is looking to become an NBA champion or to compete for that. He has a no trade clause in his contract that guarantees him to be traded to his preferred teams. Melo never thinks about leaving New York but when the fans and the media attacks his game he realizes that he can’t play in a team who does not want him.
In the potential trade include the actual NBA Champions Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics and the LA Clippers. His loyalty to the team is not paying off like Kobe, MJ or Tim Duncan’s dedication to each one of their respective franchises. Should Anthony betrayed them when he can?
The answer now is yes he has to “betray” them.
However he signed in 2014 a 5 year extension contract for 120 million. Anthony can do what his friend Lebron James did in 2010 and 2014, guaranteeing 6 consecutive finals and 3 champions.
James had the opportunity to play in 2 big threes to achieve the previous goal. Melo who was averaging 27.4 pts, 8.1 reb and 3.1 ast with .452 fg%, .402 3pt% and .848 ft% in the 2013-14 season before the extension, he could’ve been a key player to achieve a championship with another team. His impact transcends the years, and now he is averaging 23.2 pts, 6.1 reb and 2.9 ast with .441 fg%, .364 3pt% and .826 ft%. Adding his determination and leadership Melo can be again in the playoffs with or without the Knicks.
Can Melo go on a winning path again? Hopefully yes
But can he become a champion?
