Rumors here and rumors there. Trade talks here and trade talks there. But when does it end? Well…we as basketball fans tend to get these kind of things right, but right now, it seems a little unpredictable. The 2016-17 NBA season has been one heck of a roller coaster; and to be honest, I’ve never been more emotional about a season in my entire time as an NBA fan.
So, the trade deadline is less than three weeks away and some teams have some business to do. But I think, what most people are looking for is: What is going to happen to Carmelo Anthony? Will he end up in a new team? Or will he stay in New York for one more season and hope to perform a miracle to take the Knicks back to playoff contention? These are all questions with unpredictable answers.
Phil Jackson has not been kind to Carmelo ever since he stepped up as GM of the New York Knicks. And right now, as we all have heard and seen, Phil is ready to trade Carmelo for a box of cookies and some chips. He has contacted the L.A. Clippers, Boston Celtics, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Also, there are reports that say that the Oklahoma City Thunder are interested in Anthony too…but they all have not confirmed anything.
So, where does the future of Melo lies? Where is his career going to end?
This is something that has been very frustrating. Not only to all Melo fans out there, but to himself too, as he cares for his family’s comfort above anything else. We may overlook these kind of things, but moving out of a city and starting a new life in another one isn’t as simple as that. So, for Carmelo to be worried about that, is completely normal.
What’s the problem here? Simple. His legacy. His reputation as a player. Over the years, Melo’s performance has been going down, as some people say, primarily because Anthony has struggled to maintain a high level of play and the Knicks have struggled to make the playoffs for the last 3 seasons.
Therefore, Anthony has to make a tough decision. Does he leave to a contender team and follow his chances of winning an NBA Championship? Or does he stay in New York, taking all kinds of trash, not only from the front office, but from the fans too, just so that his family can be comfortable?
I guess it is a tough decision, indeed. Personally, I think his days in New York are counted. But maybe it is for the best. And if Carmelo does leave, the real question will be: “Can the Knicks be better WITHOUT him?”. Let’s hope that his destiny takes a good turn.
