I’m writing to you today, January 30th of 2017, to let you know one thing, I am going to fight for your rights. Not only am I trying to fight for your rights and leaving you a world that was better than the one I was handed, I’m fighting for the rights of your children and every human being I can help. This is being written years before you will be born, but I’m already thinking about the conversations I will be having with my grandchildren. I try and make every decision in life with one thing in mind, 35 years from now when I have my grand child in my lap and they ask, “Grandpa, when you made that decision, did you know you would hurt all those other people at the same time?” The Urban Philosopher Young Jeezy says it so eloquently, “A man once said one day you’ll have kids, and how you gone explain all the shit you did?” I think about all that now before I move in life.
One day you’ll be in middle school and you’ll begin to learn about the history of the world. You’ll be introduced to slavery, the Native-American genocide, Hitler’s reign over Germany. When you learn about those events in history you’re going to have a thought that I always had when I studied it and that is, “If I was alive then I would do…” Son, at this moment I’m going through that, “if I was alive then,” moment. Before my eyes the country that I knew and loved is crumbling before my eyes. Trump had divided this country in half. More than anything, I’m leaving this for you because I want you to know that I’m going to be on the right side of history. I will stand up against bigotry. I will stand up against hatred. I will stand up against anyone limiting America to be as great as it can be.
No one is greater than any one, the constitution says we are all created equal. Always treat people how you want your mother to be treated. Never forget that manners will take you where money can’t. A man’s integrity is the only thing he can take to the grave, a wise man once told me that and I’ll never forget it. You can’t take anything to the grave with you, you’ll merely be remembered by the way you maneuvered through life.
Never take anything for granted, and I always want you to remember one thing. My grandparents are immigrants. Your aunts and uncles are immigrants. Never forget that. Hold that true to your heart, if you do that you’ll find the right path. Just because some problems don’t affect you directly, that doesn’t mean you should ignore that problem. I want you to stand up for what’s right, just like we are now. I will use my platform and gift of writing to reach the masses with a positive message, but more importantly I will begin to march when we unite to resist. I will begin to put my money where my mouth is and do more than talk. Because of you I understand that if we don’t do something now, that YOUR generation will no longer have the luxury of discussing solution. You will be stuck living with our lack of action.
I will not fail you. When you read that text-book in school and you read about this Trump administration, just know I did everything I could to resist. I can’t fathom looking you in the eye and telling you I didn’t do everything in my power to stop this. Before you even were conceived you motivated me to be great and do everything possible to make sure you have everything you ever need in life. I want to inspire you to be a good person and to always fight for people, and not just your personal interest. I hope that when it’s your generations time to stand up against evil and make history that you look back at this and know that I gave it all I got. I know you’ll take it to the next level.
