Russell Westbrook is my favorite player to watch play in the NBA right now and it’s not even close. I can’t think of another current player who has the mix of athleticism, defense, scoring ability, agility, speed and passion quite like he possesses. At least once per game I see him do something that makes me say WOW. He looks like the fastest guy on the court and somehow the most dominant player, too. You don’t usually have that mix of a player. Allen Iverson is one of those rare guys along side Westbrook.
As of now Russell Westbrook is averaging 32.0 PPG, good enough for second in the league. His 9.9 APG are also good enough for second in the league. Before I proceed, take a second to really break down what those two stats really mean. He’s the second best scorer in the whole league, meanwhile, only James Harden is dishing out more dimes per night. That’s still the hardest stat for me to fully wrap my mind around, mostly because that stat is so hard to wrap your mind around. Not to mention that he is averaging exactly 10 RPG. We may only be 12 games into this young season but those kind of numbers are impressive.
Of course we all know that in 1961-62, Oscar Robertson became the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double for the entire season, averaging 30.8 PPG, 12.5 RPG and 11.4 APG. Do I think Westbrook can average those kind of numbers this year? Yes I do. Do I care if you think he can or not? Nope.
There is no human being on this planet who can stay in front of Westbrook one-on-one, I swear he defies gravity every time he jumps off the floor. The way he moves laterally, the way he switches direction on a dime, there’s nothing one human being can do by themselves to slow him down, let alone stop him. I have heard many people say Westbrook is too selfish at times, even after Kevin Durant‘s departure. But let’s be completely honest here, can you blame him? When you’re arguably the most physically gifted young specimen on the face of the planet, wouldn’t you want to do more, because you’re physically able to handle it? It’s hard for us to get into the heads of these athletes, we never REALLY know what they are thinking. For all we know Westbrook thinking that the work load he’s handling is him just warming up. Scary isn’t it?
Didn’t we all expect for him to kind of ball out like this? Yes. And why did we collectively think as a basketball community that he can become the second player to average a triple double for a season? I’ll tell you why, because we understand what we have been blessed to be witnessing. A young master of his craft not quite at his peak, but definitely on his way to being the man who sets the bar when it’s all said and done.
Russell Westbrook, the games most ferocious player. Russell Westbrook, the games Alpha, Alpha-Male. Russell Westbrook, the man who has the chance at making NBA history every time he steps out on the this season and for years to come.
