The Facts: As of today November 15th 2016, Warriors GM Bob Meyers has not openly said that he is open to trading Klay Thompson. Thompson started the season struggling to hit from the outside and is shooting well below his career 41.7% average at 31.9%. Klay has come out and said that fact that the Warriors signed Kevin Durant does not bother him and he wouldn’t mind taking less shots as long as amounts to the team’s success. Klay has been known to be a team player so its hard to think of him asking to be traded due to lack of touches on the offensive end.
Klay Thompson being on the trade block has become a hot topic ever since it was reported by Celtics reporter Brian Scalabrine and since then many reports claiming that the rumors are false have surfaced, like the one by Matt Moore of CBSSports claiming the rumors have been falsely started. BUT, lets pretend that the rumors are true and the Warriors are secretly shopping Thompson. There are certainly teams with the assets that would be willing to trade for the splash brother and I’ve got 4 for you.
There have been some reports about how Willie Cauley-Stein has been complaining about his playing time and would welcome a trade but apparently the Kings big man on the block is actually DeMarcus Cousins. With this trade the Warriors get their much needed big man who is also an all-star and they get Klay Thompson’s replacement in Ben McLemore. The Kings will get a first, arguably the best shooting guard in the NBA and they will have a more than capable starter at the center position in Cauley-Stein.
Although Klay Thompson would be the best player in the trade, the Nuggets would be giving up a lot of assets that should equal to the production Klay brings to the warriors. The Nuggets would give the Warriors a young starting center who is capable of becoming an all star and two above average veterans who will provide quality minutes behind their stars Draymond Green and Kevin Durant. The Nuggets will get the star they desperately need to paid with their young guys and Gallinari.
Magic Receive: Klay Thompson.
Warriors Receive: Nikola Vucevic, Mario Hezonja.
In this scenario the Warriors will again receive a big man, but unlike the trade involving the Nuggets, the big man is experienced. Nikola Vucevic will fit right in with the Warriors run and gun style of play and he will also help defend the paint on the other end. In addition to Vucevic, the Warriors will also be acquiring Mario Hezonja who is an excellent 3 point shooter and is only 21 years old. The Magic will receive a proven star in Thompson who should help accelerate their rebuild.
Jazz Receive: Klay Thompson, Kevon Looney.
Warriors Receive: Rudy Gobert, Rodney Hood.
It goes without question that this trade will make the Utah Jazz offense one of the best in the league. With the 1-2 punch of Klay Thompson and Gordon Hayward, the Jazz will have their own version of the splash bros (albeit a lesser version). The Warriors will get a very capable rim protector who will be able to run the floor and catch lobs on the other end of the court ala DeAndre Jordan and they will also acquire Rodney Hood who is quietly having a great season.
One thing to note is that all the teams in this articles besides the Golden State Warriors are in rebuild mode. Also all these trade scenarios are based on needs and unless otherwise stated these players have not been rumored to be on the trade block or discussed in any trade.
